Battlefield Tours

Battlefield tours are exciting and educational. The visitors get to walk the same paths as famous personalities of the past or ordinary people participating in unforgettable events. One of the best battlefield tours is that of the Normandy area of France.

What stands out in this area are the tons of concrete and other items the Germans used to defend the beaches of Normandy from the Allied invasions fleet and personnel. It gives the visitor an odd feeling but is not often mentioned as places to visit in the area. More well-known are the allied cemeteries and fields of battle by the coast in the area.

The area where the Omaha beach assault occurred (there were 5 beaches used for landings) as depicted in the movie by Tom Hanks, "Saving Private Ryan," can be toured. The Pointe du Hoc cliffs which had to be scaled to take out German defensive positions can be seen up close and personal. It is hard to imagine what went through the minds of the troops scaling these steep cliffs. Museums are also in the area containing objects of interest to the history buff or others who have an interest in this major event.

Battlefield tours need not be boring as museums are sometimes depicted. The visitor is walking the same ground as many before who gave their lives for both the allied and axis powers. This is a trip that has to be booked by special agencies, unless you travel to the area of northern France on your own.
