Computer Know-How:
Keeping Your Computer Cool Throughout The Summer Months

Computers, like your automobile, run better when kept cool. Below you will find three tips you can utilize in making sure your computer is running as cool as possible during the summer months.

1. Keep your computer clean inside and out. Dirt is attracted to anything with an electrical charge and your computer has plenty of electrical components. The vents in your pc case as well as the fans inside tend to collect dirt over time. This restricts airflow and slows your fans down causing your pc to heat up eroding performance and shortening its lifespan.

Pro-Tip: avoid using canned air like some people recommend. Using canned air on delicate pc components can inadvertently disconnect or damage wires and delicate components. You are apt to lodge dirt deep in crevasses where gradual vibration will loosen and set it free inside your case again. Use Q-tips and gently remove built up dirt and dust from your fans and wipe off all surfaces with a static-free fabric. If you must use canned air then use short indirect bursts and allow time for the inside of the case to dry because many canned air brands contain some level of humidity.

2. Move your computer to a location where it has unrestricted airflow. Many people stick their CPU box in or under their desk. Heat can buildup in a closed environment. Any open place is fine as long as it is not in direct sunlight.

3. Do not overclock your system. Even a slight adjustment to the clock speed of your computer can result in a temperature chance of twenty degrees. Worst-case scenario your CPU will fry and the acrid blue smoke drifting from your case will chase you from the room and quite possibly set off your fire alarm.

If you follow these three tips, your computer will remain cool throughout the summer months. If your PC alerts you that it is beginning to overheat, immediately turn the computer off and investigate the reason for the sudden increase in temperature. Usually this will be caused by the failure of one of the internal fans and is easily resolved. If this level of PC care intimidates you then you should have your computer serviced by a local computer tech before using again.
