How to Reduce Debt

Many Americans today are facing the same problem, they are drowning in debt. With mortgages, car payments, and credit cards, people keep sinking further and further. As they drown deeper into debt, their credit score also plunges. If you are looking to reduce your debt, with a little planning, monitoring, and sacrificing, you will be able to do it. To start you should request a free credit report from the government, you get one a year, and then write down all of your unpaid debts.

Now organize all of your bills, the ones you get monthly statements for, not luxuries. You need to put down how much money you have going out each month, and how much you have coming in. You need to set up times when you pay them, and make sure that you are covering all of them on time to avoid late fees and interest costs. After you do that, you need to set a budget for yourself every month. Between groceries, entertainment, and personal needs, you need to set aside an allotted amount of money each month. Try putting the money in an envelope so you are less likely to go over your budget. Take the assigned envelopes with you out to eat, the movies, or the grocery store.

Now decide how much you are going to put towards your personal debt every month. However much you decide, start applying it to your smallest unpaid debt. Once that one is paid off, move on to the next one. Even if you have to cut coupons and cut back on going out for a while, it will be well worth it once you are debt free. So start budgeting and watching your finances. Once you are out of debt, place that money your putting towards debt into a savings, and things will only get better from there.
